Feline Skin Cancer?

recently I noticed my cat (8yrs old) had a tiny tiny scab on his head by his ear. It looked like a raised scab with yellow crust, but not like a bump where there would be something under the skin. It healed in 2-3 days. I have a friend who is a vet assistant and she asked the vet she works for and he is saying that skin cancer sometimes looks that. Has anyone seen this before? I thought he had just hit his head on something and it had left a scab. I have also noticed the same kind of scab on his head before but cant remember if it was in the same spot. Does cancer in cat's come in different forms? She also advised me to take him to the vet and get his vaccines updated. Will this do anything?
Feline Skin Cancer?
I think you are worrying for nothing, right now.

It is now a healed small injury,.. could have been a bug bite or..?

Skin cancer is not all that common in cats.

An irregular formed mole or growth that spreads and does not heal,.. a blackening of a sore or skin area are some signs of skin cancer.

Take to vet if concerned.
Feline Skin Cancer?
Yes cat do get different types of cancer. Skin cancer in a cat can be very serious. Many can only be treated by surgical intervention. Cats do NOT respond to Chemo therapy.

Hope you follow your friends advice and take your kitty to visit the vet. At least you will know if it is cancer and what, if anything, can be done.

Best of luck to your kitty.
Reply:Skin cancer is pretty rare in cats over all. Very light or white colored, outdoor cats are at highest risk. However, skin cancer typically begins as a sore that won't heal. I would put triple antibiotic cream (available at walmart and perfectly safe for use on cats) on the sore for a few days. If you see improvement or it completely heals there is nothing to worry about. If it gets worse or not any better at all then a trip to the vet may be a good idea.

BTW, vaccines will do nothing for skin cancer. If your cat did have cancer (which is pretty unlikely) the vet would likely put off vaccinating the cat because vaccines stress the immune system which is not a good idea for a cat that is sick or has cancer.
Reply:There is a very slight possibility of it being skin cancer. Cancer can take any form in all kinds of living organisms except cancer cells. A cancer is a group of harmful cells that affect a part or tissue or organ or organ system of the body of an animal. If the cancer increases in size, it means the cancer cells are multiplying. So of course there are different types of cancers in all living beings, based on the area affected, be it a cat or a dog or a human But you don't have to worry. But just check if it is a bug bite as bug bites, especially from spiders can be harmful sometimes. Ask the vet himself for more details.
